Carrie & John – Deniliquin Wedding

Deniliquin Wedding

The people I meet and the way our paths cross throughout the years is constantly astounding me. John and I crossed paths on a forum many years ago which had a photography section. This was the same forum that got me into photography, introduced me to a wealth of people and has taken me around Australia documenting the stories of fellow photographers. John has a keen eye for photography, and a big passion for cars (as does Carrie). Naturally over the years we have admired each others work and chatted about what we love to shoot, however I was totally taken aback when I received a message last year from John who wanted to enquire about me coming down to capture his Deniliquin wedding.

Another wedding road trip and a chance to see more of this beautiful country? Sounds perfect to me. After a whirlwind of a skype call with John & Carrie and a lot of chatter about photography and the town, it was set. So in early April, Rose and I travelled to Deniliquin through Batlow and via our favourite Sugar Pine Forest. Deniliquin is a great little country town in the Riverina of New South Wales (about 7.5 hours drive from Sydney). It is no secret that Rose and I love escaping the city and exploring new areas. It’s flat (very flat.. you can see the curvature of the earth on the plains flat) and has a lot of character and charm. After catching up with John & Carrie we spent most of a day scouting around town, the wedding locations and taking in a beautiful country sunset. I simply could not wait for the day to unfold.

Carrie, as well as her family and friends had put their hearts and souls into this wedding. Pretty much everything was DIY and everyone chipped in with a helping hand. I really wanted to capture this day in my way, and tell their story in a way that represented them. High school sweethearts, John & Carrie have grown up and started their family in Deniliquin. All of the history, all of the memories and stories that came with growing up in Deniliquin and now raising their twin girls there was celebrated throughout the wedding day. They certainly pulled off one epic wedding event for their family and friends.

I wont lie, I felt the pressure to do my best. Shooting the wedding of another keen photographer is never an easy task. I always want to pull out the stops and take it to another level. Thankfully John & Carrie know how much I love to include the landscape in my photos, they wanted a fresh perspective of their home and gave me the time to pull it altogether. During the reception John and I had a quick word, and we ducked out into the dark of the night and captured some photos. It was only afterwards that I realised what we had captured. It was the perfect moment for them. With the faint hum of the reception behind us, it was otherwise cool and quiet. A chance for them to think back over all the years together and the many more to come. A chance to take in everything that is enjoyable about a wedding day, without the eyes of others upon them. I thank you both so much for welcoming Rose and I into your home (and town) to capture your wedding day. For giving us the chance to see more of our amazing country, and for being yourselves and having fun whilst doing it. I hope we can come down and see you again, and capture even more of that night sky.
