Nick & Alex – Engagement on Cockatoo Island
For years I have wanted to go back and visit Cockatoo Island since they opened it to the public. I have fond memories of growing up over the years and sailing around the island, whilst my dad was competing in Balmain Yacht Club races. I would often ask about it, it was mysterious, it was desolate, it was uninhabited (which for Sydney vacant land is.. well.. rare). I always wanted to get on there and explore. What better reason than two great friends of yours getting Engaged? I was so honoured to be asked to document not only Nick & Alex’s wedding, but also to capture some lovely photos for them for their Engagement on Cockatoo Island.
Fast forward many years and I now have a love of photography, I also have some good friends who are tying the knot later this year and asked me to take their photos (how could I resist?). So I thought why not combine a love of exploring,/capturing photos, with a location that would suit them both. We lucked out with one of the best afternoons we have had this winter. It was chilly as the sun went down, but really we get some amazing light this time of year.
Engagement on Cockatoo Island
If you do decide to head to Cockatoo Island, go and print this map so you can easily walk about! It is quite big and lots of little ways around the place so it definitely helps to have it handy.
Engagement sessions are a lot of fun, a great way to get used to being in front of the camera and it is hard to beat spending an afternoon outdoors. We simply choose a spot, either with a hidden meaning for you or one that suits the look/style you are after and wander around chatting and shooting.
Awesome session Jack!
